Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are miniature studs made of titanium. They serve as replacement tooth roots and provide a sturdy foundation for oral prosthetics like crowns, bridges, or implant-supported dentures.

At Lakewood Dentistry, Dr. Farah and the team use All-on-4® dental implants. All-on-4 implants can support a full arch of teeth (top or bottom) with just four implants. This means quicker surgery, less downtime, and a speedier recovery process.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Dental implants provide a variety of advantages. Their greatest benefit is restoring lost permanent teeth. This prevents gum recession and bone decay.

Dental implants also make it easier to bite, chew, and speak. They improve your oral health and are incredibly durable. In fact, with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implants can also boost your confidence and self-esteem. If you’re missing some or all of your teeth, the skin around your mouth begins to sag. Dental implants restore structure to your jaw, improving your physical appearance.

What is the process for getting dental implants?

At Lakewood Dentistry, Dr. Farah teams with a local dental laboratory to craft custom dental implants. She doesn’t offer “same day” dental implants, but she can restore your smile in a quick and efficient manner.

At your first appointment, Dr. Farah conducts an oral exam, reviews your medical history, and asks about your goals for treatment.

Next, she takes oral X-rays to look for signs of gum disease and to make sure you have enough jawbone volume. Dr. Farah might recommend periodontal treatment or a bone graft if there are signs of infection present.

Prior to placing your implants, Dr. Farah administers a local anesthetic. Once the anesthesia sets in, she places the metal posts into your jawbone. If you’re only missing one tooth, she places one post. If you’re missing a full arch of teeth, she places four. Following the procedure, you return home for three to four months while your mouth heals.

Several months later you return to Lakewood Dentistry for your second appointment. At this appointment, Dr. Farah takes impressions of your gums and remaining teeth and sends them to a dental laboratory. The dental laboratory uses your impressions to create crowns, a bridge, or implant-supported dentures.

At your third and final appointment, Dr. Farah attaches your prosthetic to your implants. This takes 60-90 minutes, and you leave the practice with a fully restored smile.
